Other Amazing FWJH Experiences

Arizona Senators Trip

The annual Senators trip is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Each January, 8th grade students travel through Washington D.C., Pennsylvania, and New York City as they learn about the history, politics, and culture of our nation. In Washington D.C., students see the White House, Lincoln Memorial, Smithsonian Museum, and many more important and exciting landmarks while an experienced tour guide teaches them about the significance of each place. Then students are transported back in time as they tour Amish country in Pennsylvania, followed by a day of historic sightseeing in Philadelphia, including visits to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Finally, students arrive in New York City. In addition to a solemn visit to the 9/11 memorial at Ground Zero, highlights in NYC include a visit to the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and a night at a Broadway play. By the end of this weeklong adventure, students not only gain a new understanding of the United States, but they gain memories that last a lifetime.

IBM/EX.I.T.E Camp

At Flowing Wells Junior High, we are extremely fortunate to have a strong partnership with IBM Tucson. The EX.I.T.E. program is an amazing opportunity for junior high girls to take a field trip to IBM and learn about careers in the sciences. EX.I.T.E. stands for EXploring Interests in Technology and Engineering, but the program encourages girls to explore much more. IBM invites our girls to spend a total of four school days at their facility where they learn about software engineering, product development, and team management. This is a unique opportunity for the girls to grow as leaders and invest in their futures. IBM has been partnering exclusively with FWJH for over a decade now, so this is the type of opportunity that students can only get with Flowing Wells.

 Science Trips

For over 30 years, the Flowing Wells Junior High Science Department has been providing students with opportunities to travel to Southern California for a four-day field trip to explore and learn and experience marine biology and life away from the desert.

Seventh-graders are provided the opportunity to go on a choice of two different trips, Project Whales or Project Catalina. On the Project Whales trip the students are able to experience science at many different venues. Students travel to the Arizona and California Science Centers, visit the Stephan Birch Aquarium and whale watch from Dana Point, finishing the trip by spending the night in Sea World! Project Catalina travels by boat to Catalina Island. On the island the students participate in many marine biology experiments and labs, and snorkel in the Pacific Ocean several times, even once at night!

The 8th grade science trip expands on the learning of the 7th grade trips by offering students two options: Project Oceans Blue and Project Oceans Gold. On Project Oceans Blue, students travel by boat to Catalina Island and engage in hands on learning about the unique ecosystem of the island. Project Oceans Gold centers on inquiry labs and activities at the Oceans Institute in Dana Point California. Blue and Gold Students meet back together for the rest of the trip as they are guided through Disneyland California Adventure’s Physics program, the Fleet Science Center, the San Diego Zoo and the Birch Aquarium. In every venue and activity on the trip science curriculum is emphasized through hands-on learning activities and teamwork to create once-in-a-lifetime memories for each student!

Student Leadership Retreat

The FWJH Student Leadership Retreat is an opportunity for 30 student leaders, selected by their peers, to go on a three-day retreat to learn essential life and leadership skills that may not be taught in the regular school curriculum. Students travel to the Triangle Y camp near Oracle, Arizona and work with Junior High staff to learn about overcoming fears, setting goals, teamwork, trust, empathy, equality, and developing a personal code of honor. The student leaders then come back to the FWJH campus and lead follow-up activities throughout the school year in an effort to positively impact the entire school community.
